Choosing your instruction
The best junior program depends on age, experience, attention span, motivation, and goals. Look for instruction that builds safe fundamentals and enjoyment before adding tournament or performance demands.
Before you choose
There is no universal starting age. A junior coach should consider the child's interest, coordination, attention span, and ability to follow safety directions; ask about the coach's normal age range before booking.
Parent-attendance policies vary by junior coach and facility. Confirm the rule in advance and ask how the coach shares practice priorities and progress with the family.
Appropriately sized equipment can make learning easier, but do not assume a purchase is required before the first junior lesson. Ask the coach what the player should bring and whether trial equipment is available.
Some junior coaches emphasize recreational fundamentals, while others also teach scoring, routines, and competition preparation. Choose a profile that matches the player's current interest rather than rushing into a tournament plan.
Start with fit, not guesswork
